Water, Environmental & Sustainability Recruitment across the United Kingdom

Why we exist

Most recruitment agencies treat the water and environmental sector as one column of many, staffed by a generalist consultant who cannot tell an AMP capital scheme from an AMP operational one, an EA-permitting engineer from a discharge-compliance engineer, or a CIWEM-chartered profile from an IEMA-chartered one. The head of resourcing receives a shortlist of near-misses, wastes two rounds of interviews, and quietly starts working with a second agency in parallel.

BlueWave Recruiters was set up to do the opposite. We are a specialist desk. Water utilities engineering, wastewater operations, environmental consulting, sustainability leadership, ESG, marine engineering, renewables operations, hydrology, water quality, environmental compliance, catchment management and water sector project management. Nothing else. Every consultant on the team has either worked in the sector, qualified within it, or spent years on a specialist water and environmental desk. We screen on genuine sector understanding, not keywords.

What we do, plainly

We place water and environmental talent for UK employers. Direct-hire placements for Tier 1 water companies, framework delivery partners, environmental consultancies, listed corporates, PE-backed environmental services businesses, renewables developers and public bodies. One consultant accountable end to end, from the intake call through onboarding follow-up.

How we vet

Every candidate on a BlueWave shortlist has been assessed against the same standard before we introduce them:

  • Chartership status and professional membership confirmed (CIWEM, IEMA, ICE, IET, MRICS, IWA, CIEEM, ImechE)
  • Sector experience validated against the brief: AMP-programme, framework delivery partner, consultancy or utility-side
  • Current comp package broken down: base, bonus target and history, benefits, allowances and any deferred compensation
  • Notice period, contractual restrictions and start-date realism
  • Motivation for move, market activity and any competing processes in flight
  • Reference readiness and background-check readiness before introduction
  • For senior roles: sector-specific case discussions and back-channel references where useful

Every shortlist arrives with our written notes on each candidate. If we cannot articulate why a candidate meets the chartership bar, the sector requirement and the cultural expectations, we do not send the CV.

Who we work with

Our clients span Tier 1 water companies, water framework delivery partners, environmental consultancies, listed corporates with material environmental exposure, PE-backed environmental services businesses, renewables developers, public bodies (Environment Agency, SEPA, Natural Resources Wales), and specialist SMEs across the United Kingdom. Heads of resourcing, technical directors and hiring committees who value a properly researched search over CV volume.

How we think about a placement

A placement is not a signed offer letter. It is the moment 12 months later when the new hire is still there, delivering, the compliance regime is holding, the AMP programme is progressing on plan, and the hiring manager has stopped thinking about backup plans. That is the outcome we measure ourselves against, and it is why our 12-month retention sits at 92 percent.

Our standards

  • Sector-fluent screening. If we cannot articulate why a candidate matches the chartership bar and the sector requirement, the CV does not leave our desk.
  • Discretion by default. Every approach is confidential. Every brief is confidential until you say otherwise.
  • Tell the truth. If a comp band is light or a brief is unrealistic for the sector, we say so before sourcing.
  • One consultant, end to end. Same person from intake through onboarding follow-up.
  • Stand behind the work. Replacement guarantee on every direct-hire placement. No clawback games.

Ready to hire

A brief worth doing properly?

One consultant, a written intake, a ranked shortlist on a published timeline. That is how a water and environmental search should run.
